Bavaria is my absolute favorite part of Germany. It’s iconic, friendly, flowing with great beer, and filled with incredible fairytale castles. A week in Bavaria will give you enough time to explore the dynamic city of Munich, then head south to one of Germany’s most picturesque regions for some castle hopping.
Munich City Guide
Munich is a beautiful city, filled with history and culture. Although Munich is quite a big city with a population close to 1.5 million, it still manages to retain a bit of a small town vibe. The city brims with festive beer halls, some of the country’s best shopping, and feels like the friendliest place in Germany. It’s got imperial palaces, crown jewels, modern art, and grand pedestrian boulevards. Munich is a true cultural powerhouse, with enough sights to easily fill a few days.
Mermaids, mermen, sea creatures, sea gods and goddesses—oh my! Fabulous glitter infused costumes were everywhere as revelers payed tribute to the sea this year for the 30th anniversary of the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. I love the wicked-cool design of these posters, created for the Nordic Fashion Biennale. The first one was held last spring in Reykjavík, Iceland with a focus on west-Nordic fashion from Iceland, Greenland, and the Faeroe Islands, with over 60 participating designers, artists, and musicians from all over the world. I am a real sucker for Icelandic design sensibility, and I fell in love with many of the designs from the show straight away. Plus I love the unity of the graphic identity—from the website’s animated birds that swoop down to land on the mannequins, to the typography and stunning iconic posters—everything seemed to match the feel of the flowing garments perfectly, some of which loosely resembled the abstract forms of wings and feathers. Can’t wait to see what’s coming up for the next show!

The Harbin Ice Festival is going on right now in Harbin, China (located in the cold, cold northeast corner of the country). The festival highlights dramatic ice sculptures, magically illuminated at night.
